Rushmie Nofsinger, Associate Director of PR, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine
SW: We are introducing a generation who is starting to or is making their mark on the Central Ma. community. What career have you chosen to move forward in?
RN: I have been working in different aspects of communications for the past 10 years or so. After attending graduate school for journalism, I worked as a reporter for a while and eventually made my way to the PR side of the business. Now, I am an associate director of public relations for the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in North Grafton, Mass. So I am charged with communicating all the interesting things that are happening on campus to the public though the media and other channels.
SW: What is the best thing about your work?
RN: It allows me to constantly learn new things, work with incredibly smart, passionate people, and do what I love everyday, which is to write.
SW: Can you describe a typical day in your life?
RN: I wake up around 4 a.m., read the news and answer email, workout (try to), have coffee with my husband and then get my 20-month-old daughter ready for daycare. And then off to work where every day is different.
SW: What is your dream job?
RN: My job entails learning about innovative science and medicine, being around animals and working alongside some of the most compelling thought leaders in veterinary medicine. So I have a dream job. One day, I hope to be writing for pleasure, painting and creating—maybe in my basement or, better yet, a villa in Tuscany.
SW: What is your favorite piece of technology?
RN: iPad or iPhone. I love that these devices allow all kinds of information to be accessed on the fly.
SW: What music do you listen to?
RN: Music by Johnny Clegg, Alison Kraus, Fleetwood Mac, Coldplay are well worn albums on my iPod. Lately, 30 Seconds to Mars has been a favorite in the rotation.
SW: What is your favorite social networking site? Why?
RN: Pinterest. It provides a spark of inspiration for just about everything. This can come in handy when you have an energetic toddler who loves playing new games and being entertained—thousands of crafty moms have already come up with fun ideas and projects.
SW: What do you do away from your career?
RN: Hang out with my family. Lots of dance parties, trips to the playground and library with my daughter. Yard work.
SW: Are you involved in the community? If so, how?
RN: I volunteer with a wonderful organization based in Worcester called Ivy Child International, which helps children build positivity, self-esteem, and life skills through mindfulness, yoga, music and art programs. Rose Pavlov, the founder and CEO, is an amazing person—her vision and desire to make a difference in the lives of children inspires me each day to try and do the same.
SW: Who or what is the biggest influence in your life?
RN: My parents. They emigrated from India when they were in their 20s and built a life far, far away from their comfort zone. I admire their courage and am grateful for every opportunity they have provided my brother and me. My dad’s life motto is: hustle and intensity. That has stuck with me.
SW: What is a fun fact few people know about you?
RN: My husband and I went out on a date in high school. I had the butterflies and was so nervous that I could barely talk to him that night. Thankfully, that didn’t happen when we reconnected years later. But he still gives me the butterflies.
SW: Your favorite quote?
RN: “My mother said to me, 'If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.' Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso.” – Pablo Picasso
SW: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
RN: I am not really sure – just trying to enjoy the here and now. But who knows what adventure is around the corner. Perhaps a good deal on that Tuscan villa will come our way!
