School Statistics
Sutton beats the state average in both the MCAS scores and SAT scores. It is a relatively small school with only 394 students. The student to teacher ratio is on par with the state. Sutton has on average 14 students per teacher; the state has 15. Lucille DiLeo, Sutton Memorial High School Principal, said "We are a very small learning community. We have a wonderful student-teacher ratio here so that we have a more personalized education than most public schools."
Close Knit School
DiLeo told GoLocalWorcester that Sutton Memorial High School is more like a "work family" than a public high school. DiLeo said, "We have a fantastic student body and wonderful parents that support the school along with very committed teachers. Everyone is vested in the school."
Soccer Stars
Not only do the students excel in the classroom, but also on the field. DiLeo said for a small school they have some great accomplishments. The boys soccer team were the state champs for division three last year.
AP Courses
Sutton has a lot students taking AP courses. DiLeo said they had 110 tests taken in AP last year; more than half of them got a 3. It is this course work that Dileo said prepares them for college level curriculum.
Virtual High School
DiLeo said, "If we can’t offer them certain classes here we pay for them to take classes through virtual high school. So maybe 50 kids take VHS courses, which helps to expand our curriculum. That expansion gives them the opportunity to poke around other fields and see what they want to do when they leave here."
College Acceptances
The students have applied to more than 128 colleges and there have been 68 acceptances that have already come through. Students have been accepted to Worcester State, Northeastern University and Harvard University, to name a few. DiLeo said this tells them they are on the right track.
