Saturday, February 18, 2012

With very impressive MCAS and SAT scores, Algonquin Regional High earned its spot at number five for top high schools in Central Massachusetts. This Northborough high school is the second largest in GoLocalWorcester’s top twenty list of high schools in Central Massachusetts.

School Statistcs

Despite the large enrollment, the school spends a substantial amount of money per student. Algonquin Regional High spent $13,695 per student during the 2010-2011 school year. That number is just shy of the state average at $13,704. Algonquin Regional High’s SAT scores were quite strong. Students averaged a 557 on verbal, 563 on writing and 580 on math. When asked about being compared to other Central Massachusetts schools, Principal Tom Mead said, "We are a part of Central Massachusetts, and we have ties to many of the fine schools in the area. We do not necessarily compete with other schools, but we look to Central Massachusetts and well beyond for ideas, programs, and solutions to our challenges."

College Admissions

Mead said Oakmont staff are constantly talking to college representatives and admissions people about their requirements. They listen to their recent graduates about their experiences in college, and their sense of preparedness.Mead said they strive to maintain high academic and social expectations. They adjust and modify their teaching through student feedback. Mead also said they try to hire the best teachers, and then give them adequate support as they grow.

They have 61 different clubs at Algonquin. All of them are student driven.
