School Statistics
This charter school by far spends the most per student than any other school on this top twenty list. This Marlborough high school spends $18,723 per student; the state average is $13,704. According to GoLocalWorcester’s stats, Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School is only one of two schools in Central Massachusetts that has 100% of its students proficient or higher in English. Students were 97% proficient or higher in math and 90% proficient or higher in science.
School Size Continues to Expand
The school is about half the size of other high schools across Massachusetts with an enrollment of 314 students during the 2010-2011 school year. This year there are about 500 students.
The Advanced Math and Science Academy opened in 2005. Students come from 70 communities, from Tyngsborough to Attleboro. Principal Jay Sweeney told GoLocalWorcester there are three ways to get into the school, " If you have siblings that go here, you live in Marlborough, Clinton, Hudson or Natick and the third way is anyone who applies. It is done by a lottery system in that order."
Doubling Up on Math
Sweeney said most schools teach math for or five periods a week and this charter school spends 75 percent more time on learning math. Sweeney claims their computer science curriculum is one of the best in the nation.
Fewer School Statistics
GoLocalWorcester used the 2009-2010 SAT scores to help us decipher the best schools in Central Massachusetts. Since Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School just had their first graduating class last year we didn't have SATS scores for them.
Feeder for Ivy League Schools
Sweeney said this year his students have already been accepted to MIT, Harvard and other Ivy League schools. Even students who have struggled at the charter are still still getting into great colleges, according to Sweeney
