School Statistics
It is one of the biggest schools in Central Massachusetts with 1,617 students during the 2010-2011 school year. Spending per student was below the state average of $13,704. Shrewbury Sr. High School $10,564 per student in the 2009-2010 school year. Shrewsbury High School Principal,Todd Bazydlo, said they do the best they can with their resources. "We set high expectations for students and staff. It is a rare day when I can go out into the parking lot at 4pm and not see tons of cars still there. The teachers work very hard and long hours."
Involving Students in the Hiring Process
Bazydlo told GoLocalWorcester that the school has a very thorough hiring process. Every constituent that is involved in our school community gets a say in who they hire. They have search teams that will vet candidates and spend a lot of time with students, teachers and parents before hiring someone. Potential hires have to do a demonstration lesson. The class then has to give feedback to the search committee. Bazydlo said, "Students play a major role in our governance. We empower students to give recommendations. As principal I put a lot of thought into who we hire and we want the kids to play a big role. I ask students if a potential hire will be the right fit for a department."
Literacy-Based Math Programs
Bazydlo said good instruction at every level improves student achievement. The ultimate test is getting high MCAS scores. Their math program is a literacy-based program. It is a non-traditional program. Bazydlo said, "Students have to think critically, then need to solve problems by interpreting what they are reading and then articulate what the answer should be."
