Charlie Baker Accepts Republican Party Nomination for Governor
Saturday, March 22, 2014
“I want to go to work every day to improve the lives of the people of Massachusetts,” said Baker in his speech. “For the single mom who needs a good job so she can pay her bills and raise her family. For the parents who need good schools in their neighborhood. For the kids and families that can't afford to the sky high cost of a college education. For our parents and grandparents who live on fixed incomes and can't afford to keep paying higher taxes. And for the small business owners and operators who need a partner in government that will support their efforts to create more good jobs.”
Baker also spoke about a push for a waiver for Obamacare, increased accessibility and affordability of higher education, and fixing the achievement gap for K-12 schools as areas of his campaign’s focus.
“The cost of a college education is crushing too many middle class families,” said Baker. “Three-year degree programs and leveraging online education are important ideas that we need to explore. And taken as a whole our K-12 school system is a great one, but we have an achievement gap that leaves too many kids behind. Schools in every school district in Massachusetts have proven they can deliver for kids but not every school is getting the job done. This has to change for the kids and their families.”
Baker beat republican candidate Mark Fisher to win the Republican Party nomination. Attorney General Martha Coakley and Treasurer Steve Grossman are the current favorites to win the nomination from the Democratic Party, which won’t be announced until June.
