City of Worcester Announces Independence Day Celebration

Saturday, May 16, 2015

The City of Worcester has announced that its Independence Day festivities will take place on July 2 at East Park on Shrewsbury Street. The event will feature a ceremonial flag-raising, patriot music from the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra and other free family activities.

The event is sponsored by the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Mass Symphony Orchestra and lead sponsor Fallon Health.

“Each year, Fallon looks forward to supporting the Central Mass. tradition that brings people together in a positive way—Worcester’s spectacular Independence Day Celebration,” says Patrick Hughes, President and CEO of Fallon Health, “ As a community-focused organization, Fallon’s sponsorship is one way to show our appreciation to the community who has stood by us for the last 38 years. We wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe Independence Day.”

The park opens at 3 PM and spectators are encouraged to grab a spot early for pre-festivities. Refreshments such as cold drinks, hot dogs, hamburgers, and ice cream are available, as well as kids’ activities and games. Kids’ activities will be provided by several vendors, including the Girls Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts, Destination Worcester, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Creedon & Company, and Price Chopper’s House of BBQ. Jake the Lion from the Worcester Bravehearts will be in attendance.

The ceremonail flag raising will kick off the night at 7:40 PM, followed by the performance of the Orchestra under the direction of conductor Alton Baggett. Acclaimed soprano Monica Hatch will be guest soloist. The orchestra will continue as a brilliant fireworks show begins at 9:30 PM.

“This event brings more than 30,000 people into the city of Worcester, giving a boost to area businesses and showcasing all that Worcester has to offer,” said Timothy Murray, president and CEO, Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We look forward to partnering with the city of Worcester on this event each year.”

“This is a must-see event for an exceptional city,” said Paul Levenson, Executive Director, Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra.  “What makes this event unique in this area is the melding of a lengthy fireworks display with a pops concert where you can hear live patriotic music throughout the entire course of the fireworks display.”
