City of Worcester Gearing Up for Potentially Huge Amounts of Snow Sunday
Saturday, February 07, 2015
According to the NWS, "Several episodes of accumulating snow are likely with the risk of significant snowfall greatest Sunday night into early Tuesday." According to several reports, the city could see anywhere between eight to 24 inches of snow fall over the next three days.
"Today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday) we will use our resources to clear snow at critical intersections to improve safety for pedestrians and vehicles. We will sand, salt and plow as needed over the next few days based on what actually happens. After plowing and sanding operations are complete, we will evaluate what next steps are needed based on the actual outcome of the storm," said Paul Moosey, DPW Commissioner.
Worcester isn't even two weeks out from the largest storm in its history dumping 33.5 inches. That storm has already been followed by two other significant snowfalls.
A week ago, at the request of Lt. Governor Karyn Polito and the city of Worcester, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) sent 24 pieces of large equipment to Worcester to help with snow removal.
With 77.7 inches of snow so far this winter, Worcester is currently the third snowiest city in the United States according to GoldenSnowGlobe.com. Worcester is only behind Erie, Pennsylvania (84.2 inches of snow) and Buffalo, NY (77.8 inches of snow) With Sunday's storm, Worcester could surpass Erie as the snowiest city in the U.S.
Worcester Public Schools have missed five days of school in the last two weeks. Potentially more school will be missed at the beginning of next week due to this storm. A decision to cancel school will likely be made on Sunday evening.
"As with the previous couple of large storms, the city manager will be coordinating the response across a number of departments, including DPW, Emergency Management, Fire, and Police. We typically have a conference call the day before to make sure everyone is up to date on the forecast and the plan for the city’s response. We will also be communicating information to the public through social media and the city’s website in real time to keep people informed," said John Hill, Communications Specialist for the City of Worcester.
