City to Shut Down Indian Lake Again for Algae Treatment

Monday, June 22, 2015

For the second time in five weeks, Indian Lake will be forced to close. On Monday, all use of the lake will be prohbited due to a checmical treatment for nuisance algae.

According to the City of Worcester, there can be no boating, fishing, swimming or irrigation and all "humans or pets should not be in contact with the lake water" on Monday.

“We are fortunate to have numerous individuals, families and local companies that have stepped forward to help us in bearing the cost of the short term plans,” said Beth Proko, president of the Indian Lake Watershed Association. “We are doing everything possible to keep the lake open this summer while we work with our city and state delegation on implementing long term plans. Short term, we would not have been able to react quickly to changes in the conditions without this support."

At the end of May, an alum treatment was done at the lake. The alum works on the bottom of the lake. The algae being treated on Monday was likely already at the top of the water before last month's treatment began.

A copper sulfate treatment will be applied Monday to reduce the algae bloom. The ILWA has hired Aquatic Control Technology to perform the treatment. The City will also contribute towards the treatment.

The lake is expected to re-open on Tuesday.
