NEW: Clark to Hold First Peace Fair Since 1992
Thursday, April 19, 2012
The Peace Studies Program at the University will host the event on Sunday, April 22 from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm. It will be located on the Campus Green, and will be the the ninth installment of the fair, which originally ran from 1985 to 1992.
The fair will serve as an event for students and community members to come together to learn about and discuss peace. Clark is bringing the fair back in an effort to examine the individual, community and global sources of peace and violence the apply to our everyday lives.
The event will include an art exhibit, peace themed activities and games, a speech workshop and displays showing how local individuals and organizations are promoting peace.
David Adams, former director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO), will deliver a public address at approximately 2:15 p.m. After his speech, Adams will lead a workshop on how to become a reporter for the International Culture of Peace News Network (CPNN), a grassroots, self-sustaining, tri-lingual news network.
“We hope that, through this programming, Clark's Peace Studies Program will help to promote a culture of peace locally and internationally,” Clark professor Jude Fernando said.
Fernando will also host an interactive and informational display on peace at the fair, along with several students and faculty members from Clark and surrounding universities. The event is, not coincidentally, being held on Earth day, and one Clark student believes that gives the fair some unique opportunities to combine with other worthy causes.
“Because the fair is being held on Earth Day,” senior Katie McGonagle said. “We are hoping to collaborate with environmental groups on campus to make a ‘Peace on Earth’ theme that will highlight connections between peace and environmental sustainability.”
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 508-793-8859 or email [email protected].
