Doherty High School’s Voorhis Named Girls Inc. National Scholar

Sunday, March 04, 2018

Doherty High School student Selam Van Voorhis has been chosen as a 2018 Girls Inc. National Scholar and awarded the $20,000 Girls Inc. Lucile Miller Wright scholarship.

“We are so proud of Selam for all of her amazing achievements, and are ecstatic to have her recognized at a national level. Selam is truly a model ‘Girls Inc. girl’, and we know she will continue to do great things during the next chapter in her life,” said Girls Inc. of Worcester CEO, Victoria Waterman.

She was selected for her outstanding academic achievements, community service work, and dedication to the Girls Inc. mission of inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold.

About Salem

Selam immigrated to America from Ethiopia after being adopted at eight years old and joined Girls Inc. the summer after she arrived. Girls Inc. was a home away from home, and Selam looks back fondly on her Girls Inc. experience.

She says she has some of her best memories, including participating in gymnastics and swimming classes, which were formed at the Providence Street location.

As Selam got older, she participated at Girls Inc. STEM & Leadership summer camp, as well as Eureka!, a year-round, five year, STEM-intensive program that engages and empowers 8th – 12th-grade girls as they develop confidence and discover leadership and academic opportunities in STEM fields. Outside of Girls Inc., Selam is just as busy with activities such as serving as the captain of her schools cross country team, volunteering at an immigrant service center, and interning in the labs of Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Lucille Miller Wright Scholarship Program

The Girls Inc. Lucille Miller Wright Scholarship program was created in 1992, when the female pilot and long-time supporter gave a bequest for scholarships for young women. Since 1993, more than $5.9 million in scholarships have made post-secondary education more accessible to over 781 high school women and has inspired them to succeed in school and consider a broad range of career possibilities.
