Drunk Driver Spits on Police Officer After Arrest for Leaving Scene of Accident

Friday, June 02, 2017

A man spit on a police officer while being escorted to his cell.

A man is under arrest after leaving the scene of an accident while driving drunk on Grafton Street in Worcester. When the man was brought to his cell, he proceeded to spit in an officer’s face.

Steven Renrick, 41, of Dorchester, is charged with Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Property Damage, Use of a Motor Vehicle Without Authority, Intimidation of a Witness, and Assault and Battery on a Police Officer.

The Incident

On May 30 at about 11:30 p.m., police were sent to 263 Grafton Street for a report of a hit and run accident. Upon arrival, the officer spoke with the caller, who said that a man had struck a gas pump and driven away. She said that he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and was threatening to fight people in the area. Several witnesses described the car as a Silver Chrysler Town and Country, and they told officers the car’s license plate number.

Shortly after the officer broadcast the car description over the radio, other officers located the car on Waverly Rd. The driver, later identified as Renrick, tried to leave the car on foot when he saw the police. Officers caught up to him and detained him while they investigated.  Renrick had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his mouth, and was so unsteady on his feet that he had difficult staying upright. His eyes were bloodshot and he was slurring his words.

Officers determined that Renrick did not have an active license to operate a motor vehicle. Officers got in touch with the car’s owner, who said that Renrick did not have permission to use the car. Renrick screamed at the car’s owner not to talk to police.  Renrick was placed under arrest and brought to the cell room.

While in the cell room, Renrick was uncooperative with booking procedures. He spat in an officer’s face as he was being taken into the cell.
