Dump Truck Strikes Worcester & Providence Railroad Bridge

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

A dump truck struck a Providence and Worcester railroad bridge on Monday, May 9 at approximately 2:20 a.m. in the area of 382 Southbridge Street.

The Incident

Police responded to the area and upon arrival they observed a 2008 Kenworth dump truck with extensive damage. The dump body struck the bridge  in the upward position which caused it to separate from the tractor.

The force of the impact flipped the tractor onto its side. The dump body became entangled with the catwalk located to the side of the bridge. Attached to the catwalk were conduit pipes containing fiber optics and electrical cables. There were not electrical outages reported.

The driver of the truck, a 33-year-old male Sutton resident, was suffering from neck, back and chest pain, he was transported tot he hospital for treatment.

The Worcester Police Department Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and took over the investigation.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the dump truck was traveling north on Southbridge Street after making a delivery to a yard nearby. The driver failed to lower the dump body after the delivery and struck the bridge in the full up position.

That resulted in extensive damage to the bridge and the dump truck and as a result Southbridge Street was shut down.

Bridge inspectors were called to the scene to conduct an extensive inspection of the damaged areas. Trains were halted or diverted as the bridge was closed to all railroad traffic.

This investigation is ongoing; investigators will be issuing several citations to the operator.
