Wednesday, August 13, 2014

The ASL "Ice Bucket Challenge" is to raise awareness for Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Pete Frates of Beverly, Massachusetts started the "Ice Bucket Challenge". Frates, who has lived with ALS since 2012, has worked with ALS Association’s Massachusetts Chapter to spread awareness of the disease.

"The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was neither planned nor strategically executed - it was viral all the way - it further reinforces the power of social media to do good - and the desire of people everyone to have joy brought into their lives and to share that joy with those closest to them, for positive results", said Nancy Thomas.

Rules of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

-The challenge is, within the next 24 hours, pour a bucket of ice water over your head, or make a donation to an ALS charity-or both.

-To make a challenge, post a video of yourself pouring a bucket of ice/water over your head to your social media. In the video, explain why you are doing it – to raise awareness and money to support the fight against ALS.

-Make sure to challenge your family and friends to also take the challenge: to douse themselves with ice water, donate to an ALS charity—or both.

-If you refuse to take the challenge, you are asked to make a donation to the ALS charity of their choice

-Anyone can challenge anyone: Ethel Kennedy challenged President Obama!

Donations raised

As of 8 a.m. today, Massachusetts has raised $316,000. Nationally, donations have soared to $2.3 million.

The money donated will battle ALS through research, care services and public policy.
