slides: GoLocal Worcester’s 14 Biggest Political Stories of 2014

Sunday, December 28, 2014

This election season was a fiery one in Central Massachusetts. The area saw plenty of young newly-elected State Representatives and the Republicans took a firm hold of Worcester County. However, only a select few grabbed the headlines of the GoLocal's 14 Biggest Political Stories of 2014.

Far and away, the two names that garnered the most attention by GoLocal's readers are the married political team of Ryan and Stephanie Fattman. Of the 14 stories below, the Fattman are directly connected to five of them. The political story with the most popularity is GoLocal Worcester's report of a mailer Ryan Fattman sent out for his State Senate bid.

Behind the Fattmans, Governor-elect Charlie Baker also received plenty of attention from readers. GoLocal Worcester covered Baker's spirited debate in Worcester with Martha Coakley, the Democrat support he was gaining in September, and Lt.Governor Karyn Polito's role in Baker's campaign.

Read all about these stories and others below.

Rep's Mailer Proves Campaign Immaturity

State Representative Ryan Fattman (R), who ran against Senator Richard Moore (D) for the Worcester and Norfolk County State Senate seat, sent out a mailer to his constituents with a picture of him licking the face of his wife, Stephanie Fattman.

Also in the limelight during this election year, Mrs. Fattman ran as the Republican candidate for Worcester County’s Register of Probate, against current Register Stephen G. Abraham.

The mailer did not have any negative effect on the Fattman's campaigns, as they both finished victorious in their races.

Finneran: Somebody Loves Her

"She was a junkie. In her late teens or early twenties, she swayed on a street corner. I could name the town, but that’s irrelevant. The friends and families of junkies know that it could be Weston or Wellesley as much as it could be Worcester or Waltham. The geography is irrelevant. The heartbreak is universal.

My wife saw her first. I was driving and we were stopped at a red light. Mentally on auto-pilot, I did not really notice her right away. My wife did. Perhaps it was the girl’s unsteadiness on her feet, the utterly vacant look, or the rumpled clothes and ratty hair which demanded attention. That’s what I saw, instantaneously, once my attention clicked in. My wife saw something else. She saw a little girl, frightened and alone, in need of everything, including love. My wife reminded me of that with her words- 'Somebody loves her.'"

Baker and Coakley Debate in Worcester

Before an underwhelming crowd at the Hanover Theatre in Worcester, Martha Coakley and Charlie Baker went back and forth for an hour on a number of topics. The debate for the Governor's seat addressed issues like healthcare, jobs, problems in Worcester, and the candidates personal use of marijuana.

The debate was protested outside of the Theatre by supporters of all of the Governor's race candidates that were not allowed to take part in the debate.

Truth Behind Chanel Prunier's Legacy 81

Prunier, along with Massachusetts Independent PAC for Working Families Chairman Robert Bradley and the Catholic Citizenship PAC, were ordered to make a payment of $17,500 to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts "in the nature of a civil forfeiture."

Over the course of seven months, the Marlborough Republican City Committee paid Prunier $17,500 for "consulting purposes" to Prunier's newly created Legacy 81 Consulting. This consulting firm was conveniently founded shortly before Prunier agreed to a resolution with the OCPF. The first payment of $2,500 came on April 14. Six more payments of the same amount would follow over the next six months.

Charlier Baker Gaining Dem Support

Finneran: The Whiny Women of Wellesley

GoLocal MindSetter Tom Finneran explains his point of view on Wellesley College women's 'hysterics' over the Sleepwalker statue on campus.

As Finneran puts it, "it’s hard to see anything remotely thoughtful or revolting about the statue. I thought of a guy who wakes up in the middle of the night in his skivvies, heading down the hallway to the bathroom. He’s groggy. He’s certainly not threatening. No self-respecting woman could possibly feel threatened by such a goofy guy."

Mass Fiscal Alliance in Central Mass

Mass Fiscal Alliance calls themselves a non-partisan, non-profit organization. They describe themselves as "advocates for fiscal responsibility and good-government policies." This past year, they did their due diligence in a failed attempt to put an end to allowing unions to donate up to $15,000 to a single candidate in a single year. Behind an amendment of newly-elected State Senator Ryan Fattman (R) of Webster, the proposal would have limited union donations to a single candidate or committee to $1,000 per year.

Mass Fiscal's members' own personal campaign contributions collectively trump that of any union organization in the state
