Heat and Holiday Hangover Could Spell Record Low Voter Turnout in Worcester
Tuesday, September 08, 2015
According to the Worcester Research Bureau, "From 2001 to 2013, the average percentage of registered voters that participated in municipal elections was 21%, with a low of 14% in 2013."
This preliminary election will likely see even a lower percentage of voters than 2013.
As of noon on Tuesday, GoLocalWorcester found that voting polls were slow everywhere. Workers at the polls contributed the low turnouts to senior citizens not wanting to be outside in the heat, and people simply forgetting about voting after coming back from vacation.
At the Bethlehem Covenant Church on Greenwood Street (Ward 6 Precinct 5), voter turnout was less than 10 people an hour.
