According to the police, the man, 34, of Holden, suffered burns on about 30% of his body and that he ingested a significant amount of soot into his lungs.
This investigation is in the early stages.
The Incident
On Thursday, November 22, at approximately 12:55 a.m., Worcester Police responded to the area of 889 Grove Street for a report of a single car crash. Upon the officers arrival they saw a 2007 Jeep Wrangler in the middle of the road, on its roof and engulfed in flames. Members of the Worcester Fire Department were on scene and extinguished the flames. The sole occupant of the vehicle, the operator, was already out of the vehicle and being treated by fire personnel.
The driver, a 34-year-old male from Holden was stabilized and transported to a local hospital.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the Jeep was traveling north on Grove Street, heading towards the Holden town line. Evidence suggests that the Jeep began to travel a distance on the side of the roadway next to the guardrail. At one point the Jeep impacted the guardrail which sent the vehicle out of control and flipping onto the roof. Once the Jeep can to rest onto the roof the vehicle erupted into flames.
One of the Recon investigators went to the hospital to check on the condition of the driver. The investigator was told that the man suffered burns on about 30% of his body and that he ingested a significant amount of soot into his lungs. The driver is currently listed in critical condition in the ICU.
Investigators will speak with witnesses and process evidence as well as inspecting the Jeep for any mechanical deficiencies. There were no other injuries reported.
