In Case You Missed It: Worcester’s Entrepreneurial Scene

Saturday, May 04, 2013

A profile of Worcester entrepreneur Ashley Troy was one of several business-related features that topped the week.

"In Case You Missed It," GoLocal's Saturday feature, puts the week's top stories in one easy place for you to review and read. Check out what dominated the news cycle this week in Central Massachusetts and get all the details with these easy links.

Steven Jones-D'Agostino's look at Worcester's reviving entrepreneurial scene was one of the GoLocalWorcester's most read and shared stories. "Back in 2001, the Worcester Venture Fund opened to great fanfare," Jones-D'Agostino wrote. "The initial focus of the $16-million private venture-capital fund was telecom and infotech. By today’s standards, the fund’s goal was quite ambitious: Invest in up to 10 companies over a two-year period. At the time, though, it seemed like a fairly realistic goal."

"But reality proved to be more difficult than originally thought. The Worcester Venture Fund made a $2-million investment in one local company and put $130,000 toward a group investment in another one. Then came the collapse of the telecom/infotech sector."

Also this week in Central Mass., George Charles Allen's "Worcester's Women Entrepreneurs" profile of Ashley Troy was another of the week's best-read and shared stories.
