Investigation Continues in Death of 2-Year-Old Auburn Girl

Thursday, September 17, 2015

The investigation in the death of 2-year-old Avalena Conway Coxon in Auburn last month is ongoing as Massachusetts State Police Detectives and Auburn Police continue to work with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of the girl’s death.

According to District Attorney Joe Early, "This is a death investigation. The completion of the autopsy, particularly the cause and manner of death, will go a long way toward answering questions about what happened to this little girl.”

Avalena and a second toddler, then 22-months-old, were found unresponsive on August 15 at the home of their foster mother Kimberly L. Malpass. The toddlers were taken to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester.

Avalena was pronounced dead at the hospital and the 22-month-old was admitted for treatment in critical condition. The second child is alive and remains in the custody of Department of Children and Families.

Earlier this month, Avalena's mother, 27-year-old Jessica Conway, was pronounced dead after she was found unresponsive at an apartment on Orne Street in Worcester.
