John Monfredo: Worcester Library Foundation, An Asset to the City
Saturday, September 20, 2014
John Monfredo, GoLocalWorcester MINDSETTER™
The Foundation was founded in 2003 by a group of concerned citizens who recognized a need for private support to enhance the services of Worcester’s best bargain: the public library. Since its inception there has been a forward movement in spreading the love of reading throughout Worcester. Worcester now has added two mobile libraries, and has expanded additional branch libraries throughout the Worcester area. We even have the main library open on Sundays. A few of the goals of this organization are to strengthen student outcomes in particular reading levels; empower students to become lifelong learners with the skills, resources, and tools to think, create, share and grow in school and beyond; build hubs that support teaching and learning and foster independent, motivated readers;
and encourage a child’s family members to participate in literacy activities by providing equitable access to staff, students, community organizations and parents/guardians.
As Dr. Robert Sorrenti, President of the Board, stated at the meeting, “The work of the Library Foundation continues to make a difference for all library patrons and is made possible because of the many supporters in Worcester… let me express our gratitude to the various organizations that have provided financial support for the One City, One Library as well as for other programs within the Worcester Public Library.” There are a number of cooperate sponsors, colleges and a host of individuals that have made significant contributions to the library.
A very interesting statistic mentioned was success of the One City, One Library concept… the three branch libraries as part of the Worcester Public Schools (Roosevelt, Tatnuck and Goddard). In one short year over 81,000 visitors have used the branch libraries and over 1,200 new library cards have been issued, and over 64,000 items loaned.
I am excited about the progress we are making in our fight for a strong literacy community. It was the goal of my wife and I when we started “Worcester: the City that Reads” nine years ago to move from the slogan to the reality of becoming a city that reads. Remember, public libraries are more than books and computers. Libraries are places where individuals gather to search, network, and imagine. The library services are community builders and are champions of youth.
At the meeting head Librarian Tracey Leger-Hornby spoke about the collaboration with the Worcester Public Schools and about the many initiatives: summer reading, the success our rolling mobile libraries and the need for the momentum to continue.
Executive Director of the Foundation, Christine Murray then thanked the many groups that have contributed to the success of the library and acknowledged, “The branch libraries are providing schools and the neighboring communities with a wealth of resources and programming that will truly make a difference in the future of our youth… children who cannot read proficiently by the third grade are four times more likely to leave high school without a diploma.” Again, this was a reminder about the value of libraries in this community.
Stating that more needs to be done Ms. Murray spoke about the fundraiser on October 9th at the Worcester Country Club for the Celebration of Authors’ Event. The event will help support the One City, One Library initiative as well as other important library resources and programming. For more information on this event call 508-799-1656 or email [email protected]. Featured authors include… Thomas Christopher Greene, Michael Patrick MacDonald, Sue Miller, Jessica Lamb-Shapiro, and James Scott. Please consider supporting this event by submitting a donation to the Worcester Library Foundation.
The audience then had the pleasure to hear James Dempsey, author and a professor at WPI. Mr. Dempsey spoke about his latest writing, a biography of Scofield Thayer. The book, The Tortured Life of Scofield Thayer examines Mr. Thayer as more than a unyielding promoter of art and literature for he is best known for his art collection now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and as a publisher and editor of the literary magazine “The Dial” during the 1920’s. He was also born in Worcester and in his early years lived at 973 Main Street.
The evening was a great event for the public and it embodied the wonderful work of the Worcester Pubic Library Foundation. Well done!
