Local Activists to Hold Rally Tonight at City Hall

Tuesday, April 14, 2015

Communities United Collective (CUC), an alliance against systemic oppression, will be rallying tonight in front of City Hall prior to the Worcester City Council meeting.

The group is rallying against "attempts by the city to silence and intimidate protesters." Specifically, the CUC will air their grievances following the city's decision to summons protesters that blocked Kelley Square on January 21.

According to the CUC, "The protest was well-organized and non-violent, with protesters at one point clearing the street, as planned, in order to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. In response to that incident, the City of Worcester has issued summonses to protesters, threatened criminal charges against those who took part, and openly condemned those who participate in non-violent, open protest against city policies, as well as actions taken in support of the national Black Lives Matter movement."

The rally will begin with a press conference and statement from the CUC regarding the city's actions. The statement will be followed by speakers from Worcester organizations "who stand in solidarity against any attempts to intimidate activists with offical actions and criminal charges."

The rally will begin at 6 PM.
