MA Gubernatorial Candidates Stand Up For Central MA Charter School

Thursday, October 16, 2014

Both Charlie Baker and Martha Coakley have come out in opposition to the state’s rejection of all new charter schools in Massachusetts, including one that was applying in Fitchburg.

While the charter schools were rejected because of existing laws and regulations, Baker says that the state should strongly reconsider the rejection, believing that by not allowing for more charter schools, the state is hindering greater access to high quality schools.

"As Governor, I will fight any attempts to put politics ahead of children in the Commonwealth's cities and I hope the Department of Education will reconsider their decision to limit access to quality schools," said Charlie Baker.

Baker also called on his opponent Martha Coakley to join him in standing in opposition to the charter school ruling, which see did in an email shortly thereafter.

"Today's news that all new charter school proposals were rejected is disappointing, and I am calling on the Department of Education to reconsider the decision. Families and children in Brockton and Fitchburg deserved better.  We shouldn't let a technicality get in the way of offering increased opportunities to our children in school districts across the state."

District Is Performing Too Well

While the charter school in Fitchburg initially looked as though it would be approved, the most recent batch of MCAS scores debunked that, as Fitchburg is no longer among the 10-percent of lowest performing districts.

Provisions to the state law that were added by the 2010 Achievement Gap Act say that the first two charter schools approved in any given year must be in the must be in the lowest 10-percent of districts, which also disqualified a charter school in Brockton.

"As a result, based on their currently proposed service areas, neither of the currently pending commonwealth charter school applications would be eligible for approval under the statutory requirement," Jacqueline Reis, spokeswoman for the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.”

Local Opposition

The debate for and against charter schools in Central Massachusetts has been strong, with those for the schools saying that they offer a great alternative education and those against saying that the selective charter schools suck funding and talent away from public schools.

Upon hearing that both candidates were in favor of reexamining charter school applications, Worcester School Committee member Tracy Novick took to a blog post to show that the two gubernatorial candidates could be a little misguided.

“Both candidates for governor from major parties just affirmed that what we do in urban school systems doesn't actually matter,” said Novick in a blog post. After she read Coakley’s comment about charter schools she responded by saying “There you have it: student growth is a ‘technicality.’”
