The case of Gregory Hamalian, the former Holy Cross student that posted threats on social media to shoot up a local movie theater, has been dragging along in the Worcester district court system for around a year and a half.
Hamalian was charged with four counts of threats to commit a crime and one count of making a terroristic threat when he threatened on the website 4chan.org, that he was going to shoot up a local theater during the premier of The Hobbit, partially in response to the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting a few months prior.
“I would say that a year and a half is not typical for a court case like this,” said Michael Erlich, a criminal defense lawyer in Worcester. “He had four misdemeanors and one felony; this seems like a long time to be dragged out in district court. But if a psychiatric evaluation or something of that nature was ordered, I could see why the case could be longer; those things take some time.”
Hamalian was initially scheduled for a January 11, 2013 court date, but his case still has yet to be resolved. Hamalian’s current court date is set for July 7, 2014.
