NEW: Man Arrested for Stealing SUV with 7-Year-Old Girl Inside

A 28-year-old man from Hardwick was arrested late Monday afternoon for stealing an SUV from Main Street in Worcester with a 7-year-old girl inside.

According to the Worcester Police Department, an officer working on a grant detail for the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program witnessed an altercation at 805 Main Street. The officer observed a white SUV with it's driver side door open pull away from the curb abruptly and speed off. A man then went chasing and screaming after the vehicle. The man alerted the officer in the cruiser by screaming and pointing at the SUV driving away.

The officer spun his cruiser around and stopped the SUV in front of 781 Main Street. Once the SUV stopped, a 7-year-old girl jumped out of the back seat and ran towards the man that was screaming. The girl was crying and shaking and very upset.

Richard McBride, of 678 Jackson Road, Hardwick, MA, stepped out from the SUV. The man chasing the SUV ran up to McBride and restrained him against the vehicle. The officer separated the men.

The man chasing the SUV informed the officer that he owns the SUV and parked it in front of Cibao Market. The man stated that he was running in the store for a quick purchase and left his daughter inside the SUV. The daughter was sitting in the rear seat.

The man left the SUV running. Mr. McBride was standing near the SUV when the man exited the vehicle. Mr. McBride took the opportunity and jumped into the SUV and drove off with SUV. It was at this time that the officer came upon the scene and intervened.

Mr. McBride was placed under arrest and charged with Kidnapping, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle and Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Revoked License. Mr. McBride was held overnight at police headquarters and transported to the Worcester county District Courthouse this morning for arraignment.
