A man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after he shot at Lunenburg police officers near a home on Route 13 around 12:30 a.m.

Brian Binder, 31, of New Hampshire is charged with two counts of attempted murder along with other charges after exchanging gunfire with Lunenburg Police.

He was arraigned in Fitchburg District Court on Friday.

Judge Dennis Sargent ordered Binder held without bail for a dangerousness hearing on Tuesday in Fitchburg District Court.

The Incident

According to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr., Binder was acting suspiciously near the home and police were called in.

“As officers attempted to make contact, Binder allegedly pulled a handgun from his backpack and fired at the officers. Police returned fire, striking Binder once in the hand,” said Early in a statement.

During the exchange, Binder was shot in the hand and ran off into the woods.

He was captured a short time later and taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

According to the prosecutor, Binder has a criminal record in New Hampshire that includes kidnapping.
