Massachusetts Gets a D+ from the Center for Public Integrity
Tuesday, November 10, 2015
The study examined a state's integrity across 13 methods in order to determine a state’s ranking. Massachusetts finished with a grade of “D+”, 10th out of the 50 states reviewed in the study.
Massachusetts received grades ranging from "A", which it received for Political Financing, to "F." The state was scored at an “F” for Public Access to Information, Judicial Accountability and Lobbying Disclosure.
Part of the reason for Massachusetts' substandard rating, according to the Center of Public Integrity, is its relative lack of technological advancements in the public information sphere, particularly given its reputation as a breeding ground for intelligence and innovation.
"High-tech failures, in a region engulfed in data and tech talent, drove the Bay State to earn multiple D’s and F’s in a new national scorecard assessing the vigor of state accountability and transparency," the study reads. "Massachusetts earned a 67 — or a D+ — and tied with Iowa for 10th place nationwide in the State Integrity Investigation, conducted by the Center for Public Integrity and Global Integrity."
