McGovern Announces $1 Million to WRTA to Increase Reliability of Green Buses
Thursday, February 05, 2015
McGovern said, “The WRTA has made tremendous progress in making its fleet more energy efficient and I commend them for it. Acquisition of this technology increases the efficiency of their busses while also allowing for continuity of service during emergencies.”
The funding was awareded through the U.S. Dept of Transportaion's Federal Transit Adminstration's Low or No Emission Vehicle Deployment Program. The funding allows the WRTA to run an Electric Bus Fast Charger with Emergency Power Generation. This new fast charger, combined with the city's other six electric buses and fast charger will increase electric bus operations and allow continued service during power outages or maintenance failures.
“The WRTA is very happy to receive this $1 million award. It would like to thank Congressman McGovern for his support and efforts,” said Stephen O'Neil, WRTA Administrator. “This award will allow the WRTA to continue its progress with the electric buses by providing a redundant power source and extended use of the electric buses for our customers. Not only are we reducing our carbon footprint, but we are saving money by not purchasing as much fossil fuel. This savings will be put back into more improvements to the service for our customers.”
