McGovern Announces $3 Million Federal Grant to Help End Veteran Homelessness

Monday, October 06, 2014

U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern announced that Veterans Inc. will receive $3 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to prevent Veterans from becoming homeless. McGovern made the announcement at a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating Veterans Inc. ownership of the former Massachusetts National Guard Armory Building.

“Veterans Inc. has maximized the use of this historic property, thereby enabling them to expand their services to Veterans and their families,” said U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern. “I am especially happy to announce the award of federal funds that will support their outstanding programs and services. The fact that this was one of only 82 awards made nationally to non-profit agencies recognizes that Veterans Inc. is a national leader in ending homelessness among Veterans.”

"Veterans Inc. is proud to celebrate our presence in the historic Armory building along with the dedicated public servants who have supported our mission along the way," said Vincent J. Perrone, President & CEO of Veterans Inc. "Congressman McGovern has been a true friend and partner, and his lifelong commitment to confronting homelessness and the challenges faced by veterans is unmatched."

Veterans Inc.

Veterans Inc. located their headquarters in the abandoned historic Massachusetts National Guard Armory Building 25 years ago. Since 1991, over 50,000 Veterans and their families have been assisted by Veterans Inc. at this downtown location.

Since 2011, Veterans Inc. has provided services to nearly 1,575 households. Nearly 100% of those assisted through this program remained stably housed during the six month follow up period conducted by Veterans Inc.

The grant is part of a $207 million national Veteran homeless prevention effort that will be distributed to 82 non-profit agencies and include “surge” funding for 56 high need communities. The grants will help approximately 70,000 Veterans who are either homeless or at risk of homelessness. This funding is in addition to $300 million that was announced on August 11, 2014, serving 115,000 Veterans and their family members.

The program, Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), is intended to support President Obama’s goal of ending Veteran homelessness by the end of 2015. According to the 2014 Point-in-Time Estimates of Homelessness, homelessness among Veterans has declined 33 percent since 2010.

"We have become experts in understanding the complexities of care that veterans face," said Denis M. Leary, Executive Director of Veterans Inc. "This funding will allow us to more fully complete our mission of service to veterans, and this building will go a long way towards that goal. Congressman McGovern's support has been invaluable in helping us take these important steps."

Through the homeless Veterans initiative, the VA has committed more than $1 billion in FY 2014 to strengthen programs that prevent and end homelessness among Veterans. The VA provides a range of services to homeless Veterans, including health care, housing, job training, and education.

“The Department of Veterans Affairs is committed to using evidence based approaches such as SSVF to prevent homelessness and produce successful outcomes for Veterans and their families,” Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald said. “This is a program that works, because it allows VA staff and local homeless service providers to work together to address the unique challenges that make it difficult for some Veterans and their families to remain stably housed.”
