Kwaku Amponsha, a student attending Claremont Academy, will be going to Bucknell University; Alex Back from Doherty who will be attending Memorial Hamilton College; Nancy Lopez Ramirez from North High who will attend North High Union College; Vanna Tran from University Park Campus who will be going to Benison University and one of my favorite students from my principal days at Belmont Community School, Sha-Asia Taylor from Worcester Technical High School who will be attending Bucknell University.
The Posse program is one of the most comprehensive and renowned college access and youth leadership development programs in the United States. President Barack Obama in an interview with The Chronicle of Higher Education stated, “one of the this year’s MacArthur awardees – the genius awards - is an innovator named Deborah Bial. She proposed a model to identify promising students from … urban backgrounds using an alterative set of qualities as predictors of success in college… the students that are selected form a “Posse” and are provided with extra supports and end up graduating from selective colleges with a very high success rate.”
Founded in 1989, Posse identifies public high school students with extrandinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. Posse extends to those students the opportunity to pursue personal and academic excellence by placing them in supportive multicultural teams – Posses- of ten students. Posse partner colleges and universities award Posse Scholarships for four year, full-tuition leadership scholarships.
Congratulations to the Posse Foundation for believing in our youth. They have awarded an incredible $688 million in leadership scholarships to young people and have seen their success not only as leaders on campus, but in these students’ 90% persistence of equity in education and social justice. They believe in the intelligence, talent and dreams of young people who might not always show up on their radar screens and are giving them a chance to excel. Many applied but few are chosen so congratulations to our five recipients from the Worcester Public Schools who were successful in acquiring this wonderful scholarship from the Posse Foundation.
Read their names again for those will be our future leaders in Worcester in the 2020 decade.
