NEW: City Remains Open Despite Hurricane

Monday, October 29, 2012

Central Mass schools may be closed, but the City of Worcester will remain open despite the arrival of Hurricane Sandy in the region today.

City Hall and all City Departments were open for business as of 8:30a.m. The Department of Public Works and Parks will follow the normal Monday collection schedule for trash and recycling collection.

The City Manager has all operational departments set for a coordinated City response to Hurricane Sandy, with latest storm track set to bring strong sustained winds and heavy rain to the City. These strong winds will have the capability to topple utility poles and trees, as well as snap tree limbs causing them to fall on power lines and disrupt electrical service. Worcester residents are urged to prepare for severe weather related effects such as downed trees and potential power outages.

The City's Emergency Operation Center (EOC), the base of coordination for the City's coordinated response, was in full operation as of 7:00a.m. Monday. Emergency Management staff has been working throughout the weekend monitoring the storm track and forecasts, assembling resources and planning responses.

Officials will continue to update te community as to current conditions and damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy though all traditional media and also through the City's website and Facebook Page, as well as ALERTWorcester.

Emergency Calls 9-1-1

The Emergency 911 Communications, the Worcester Fire Department and the Worcester Police Department will prioritize and will respond to all emergency calls.

DPW Customer Service Center: 508-929-1300

Customer Service Representatives will begin taking calls on Monday at 8:30 AM. Residents should call this number to report down trees, tree limbs, blocked roadways, sewage backup or other City related storm issues. Citizens should report all trees and limbs down, including those with entangled overhead wires. National Grid should also be notified of all downed wires (see below).

National Grid – The 24-hour Customer Service Line: 1-800-465-1212 for all power outages.

Downed wires should be reported to National Grid. Some of these wires may be telephone or cable wires BUT all downed wires should be considered dangerous and NOT handled in any way. Everyone should be kept clear of the downed wires. Information as to National Grid repairs and restoration timelines should be directed to National Grid's customer service personnel.
