slides: New England’s Top 50 Public High Schools: Massachusetts Runners-Up

Friday, August 23, 2013

While a remarkable 26 Massachusetts high schools made New England's Top 50 Public High School list for 2013, another 28 outstanding public, charter and technical schools have earned an honorable mention for their high standing nationally in US News & World Report's Best High Schools 2013 report.

At the head of the pack is Central Massachusetts's own Shrewsbury Senior High School, which was named the #630 best public high school in America by US News in 2013. US News compiles data on more than 21,000 public high schools and derives each school's ranking on two central features: how well each schools prepares its students for college and how many students display proficiency on their state's standardized assessment examinations.

To see New England's Top 50 high schools, go here.

Below, see which Massachusetts schools followed the state's top performers, and compare each school's college readiness index from US News as well as its proficiency results and student/teacher ratios.

Note on academic indicators, below: As part of its assessment and ranking, US News creates a College Readiness Index score to reflect how many students take AP and IB exams, and how they perform (the maximum index score is 100). Math and reading proficiency scores indicate what percentage of students were at or above proficiency in MA's MCAS testing in both subjects.
