NEW: Lt. Gov. Murray Announces Affordable Housing for Paxton Seniors

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray was in Paxton today to announce that the Paxton Senior Housing project will provide affordable homes for seniors in the area and create jobs.

Murray outlined the recent funding that led to the project creating affordable housing for 50 seniors in Paxton, and an estimated 69 local construction jobs. Murray was joined by U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern at the John Bauer Senior Center to award $2.7 million for the Senior Housing project in Paxton.

The award was a part of a $105 million investment statewide in affordable housing for families, seniors and veterans. That investment includes over $23 million in federal low-income housing tax credits, and $61 million in state and federal housing program subsidies.

“Investing in affordable housing for our veterans, elderly residents and low-income families is critical to strengthening communities like Paxton and ending homelessness in the Commonwealth,” Lieutenant Governor Murray said. “By partnering with the state’s congressional delegation, we are delivering greater resources and creating significant construction jobs right here in Paxton as we increase our stock of affordable housing for families and individuals in Massachusetts.”

The Paxton Senior Housing project will also provide residents with support services, exercise facilities and outdoor space. Congressman McGovern was just happy that Massachusetts could make the process of finding homes easier on Paxton’s seniors.

“The process for limited-income seniors to find available apartments is long and stressful. This new development will alleviate some of that shortage, while providing construction jobs and an impact far beyond its 50 residences,” said Congressman McGovern. “Paxton is a special community. I’m pleased that seniors who have spent their lives here will now have an affordable option to stay in the community they know and love.”
