New MA Law Requires Drivers to Use Headlights in Bad Weather

Tuesday, April 07, 2015

On Monday morning, the Massachusetts State Police and Mass. Department of Transportaiton Registry of Motor Vehicles and Highway Divisions released an advisory to motorists explaining a new law that will take affect today.

The law requires the use of headlights and tailights on motor vehicles during inclement weather and when drivers are using their windshield wipers. According to the MA State Police, the law is intended to increase safety and visibility of vehicles on Massachusetts' highways.

Changes to Mass General Law Chapter 85, Section 15, were signed into law in January and require that headlights and taillights be activated during these conditions:

  • When windshield wipers are on
  • When low light or weather conditions prevent other vehicles or persons from being seen at 500 feet
  • From ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise

Violation of the law is considered a surchargeable minor motor vehicle traffic offense.
