NEW: Mass Academy of Math and Science Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Thursday, May 24, 2012
Numerous officials were on hand to congratulate the school, including Lt. Gov. Tim Murray and U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern. Former State Senator Arthur Chase, who was instrumental in the legislation that established the Academy, was in attendance as well, and offered historical perspective.
“I had the idea that we could do a lot more if the state partnered with one of the best colleges in the country, WPI,” Chase said. "I went through Jon Strauss, who was the president of WPI at the time, and he had the foresight, the wisdom and the courage to accept it as a great idea. He took the ball from there, and we developed the Mass Academy of Math and Science."
The alumni reflection was delivered by Melissa Tate, the president of the Society of Women Engineers. While Tate is one distinguished alumni, the Academy has produced an abundance of accomplished graduates. Since its doors opened in 1993, the Academy has graduated 751 students. Every one of them has been accepted to a four-year college or university.
“Not only does every student get accepted into a four-year college,” Chase said. "But they also walk away from the Academy with one full year of college credit, because during their senior years they integrate with the freshman class of WPI."
Getting into the Academy has certainly not been easy over the years. Each year the faculty admits about 50 students to join the junior class, and no students are admitted during their senior years. Most students are high honors students, and come from about 80 different schools in Central Mass.
The Academy gives its students more than 1,200 hours of instruction over their two years in the curriculum. To find out more information about the Academy, click here.
