NEW: Mass Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be Rededicated
Friday, April 20, 2012
The Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial – located in Worcester's Green Hill Park – was originally dedicated in June of 2002. It honors soldiers that served the United States between 1955 and 1975. This memorial is the only permanent monument to veterans of the Vietnam War in the state of Massachusetts.
“Although this Memorial especially honors and remembers the service and sacrifice of those from Massachusetts who gave their lives and freedom in Vietnam, it is dedicated to all those from the Commonwealth who served their country between 1955 and 1975,” said Phil Madaio, President of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans Memorial. “It is a place to provide a dignified, quiet, natural location for reflection and learning.”
The event will be three days long, covering the first weekend in June.
On Friday, June 1, at 9:00 AM, the event begins with a golf tournament at the Green Hill Golf Course. The rededication – which includes a reading of all of the names – will begin Saturday, June 2 at 11:00 AM, with the the dedication ceremony itself taking place at 1:00 PM at the site of the Memorial. A tenth anniversary dinner will be held at Union Station Saturday evening.
Sunday, June 3, will feature a freedom ride sponsored by the Massachusetts Chapter of Rolling Thunder Inc. Rolling Thunder is a non-profit organization that helps veterans and prisoners of war through veterans assistance and public education.
This entire event is free and open to the public. All are encouraged to attend.
