NEW: McGourthy To Head Worcester Regional Research Bureau

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Today, the Worcester Regional Research Bureau (WRRB) announced that they have selected their next leader.

Timothy J. McGourthy, who currently serves as the Chief Development Officer for the City of Worcester, has been appointed Executive Director of the Bureau. McGourthy will begin this new role in February 2014.

“We are truly delighted that Tim will be the new Executive Director of the Worcester Regional Research Bureau,” said Chair of the WRRB Board, Karen E. Duffy. “Dr. Roberta Schaefer, who led the organization for nearly 30 years, did an extraordinary job establishing and growing the WRRB. The organization is well-respected and recognized for its unprecedented work in research and public policy. We believe that Tim’s extensive research and policy experience, along with his experience in working to collaborate with both public and private entities, make him a perfect choice to take the WRRB into the future.”

Current president of the WRRB, Roberta R. Schaefer, Ph.D. announced her plans of retirement to the Board of Directors in October, but will remain in her position until McGourthy takes the helm.

Under Schaefer’s direction, the Bureau grew from a one-person office preparing studies on municipal issues to a four-person regional center of information and expertise in all areas of public policy in Central Massachusetts. Reports and forums provide well-documented information and recommendations, which public officials and business and community leaders can use for debating important issues and developing sound public policy.

“I am very pleased with the Search Committee’s decision to hire Tim McGourthy as my successor at The Research Bureau," said Schaefer. "I have had the pleasure of working with Tim on many occasions since he came to Worcester in 2006. He is a man of considerable intellect, judgment, talent, and experience. I am confident that he will uphold the integrity of the Bureau and the quality of its work while bringing the organization to yet higher levels."

McGourthy has served as Chief Development Officer for the City of Worcester since 2006, McGourthy and also as Chief Executive Officer of the Worcester Redevelopment Authority, and Director of Economic Development for the City of Worcester. His experience and legacy with Worcester is deep and extensive. Over the years, McGourthy served as the cabinet official responsible for oversight of nine city divisions, developed plans for economic growth and development of Worcester’s downtown and key neighborhood centers including the successful completion of strategic plans for Downtown, Lincoln Square and Washington Square.

“I have known Tim for many years and have the highest regard for him both personally and as a professional," said Brian W. Thompson, VP for Finance, WRRB Board of Directors. "His knowledge of the City and the region will be most helpful in his new role. The Worcester Regional Research Bureau is most fortunate to have secured the talents of such a strong professional to replace our founder and leader, Roberta Schaefer.”

McGourthy has received numerous awards and professional recognitions, and is a regular featured speaker on public policy, city planning, economic development, and redevelopment.
