NEW: National Grid Warns of Latest Payment Scam

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

National Grid released a statement on Tuesday warning its customers of a new, nationwide utility bill scam.

According to the New England utility provider, National Grid electric customers have received phone calls from individuals claiming to work for National Grid over the past several days.

The scammers proceed to demand payment on past due balances for electric accounts and threaten customers with an immediate shut-off of their service if they don't pay up. In some of the calls, the scammers tell the customers that their electric meters are faulty and dangerous, and that they have to pony up a substantial fee for a replacement.

Since the scammers are attempting to force customers to make immediate, over-the-phone payments in order to keep the lights on in their homes, National Grid reminded its subscribers that it never seeks any type of payments over the phone.

National Grid is encouraging customers who have received these calls to call the Customer Contact Center immediately. Customers in New England can call 1-800-322-3223.
