New: Nursing Home Employee Steals Thousands from Patients

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

The former manager of a Worcester nursing home has been sentenced after pleading guilty to stealing nearly $15,000 in patient funds today.

Helen Maynard, 42, of Whitinsville has been sentenced to four years probation, and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $14,742 after pleading guilty to one count of larceny over $250 by false pretenses. Maynard first pled not guilty during her arraignment on October 7th of last year, but changed her plea on March 8th amid a flurry of evidence discovered by her former employer.

The former business manager of West Side House of Worcester was sentenced in Worcester District Court, and Attorney General Martha Coakley believes justice was served.

“This nursing facility and others like it provide a vital service to seniors in need and we’re very happy to have secured restitution for the patients who had their money stolen,” A.G. Coakley said. “Our office will continue to work to protect seniors and prosecute those who take advantage of individuals who entrust their care to others.”

Shortly after Maynard’s resignation from West Side in January of 2010, employees at the 91-bed geriatric skilled nursing facility realized that their Patient Needs Allowance (PNA) could not be reconciled for from January-December of 2009. This prompted an investigation led by Assistant Attorney General Evelyn Y. Tang. The investigation found that Maynard, who was responsible for handling PNA records, had been changing check amounts and failing to record checks that were cashed.

As the final part of her sentencing, Maynard will go through counseling, and has been ordered to stay away from any form of employment that requires handling money.
