NEW: Poll Shows Gomez 4 Points Behind Markey

Friday, May 03, 2013

A poll released Friday shows Republican Gabriel E. Gomez to be almost neck-in-neck with his Democrat opponent, US Representative Edward J. Markey in the race to fill John Kerry's seat in the US Senate, trailing Markey by a mere 4 points.

The survey was conducted by the firm Public Policy Polling. Out of 1,539 likely voters, the automated telephone survey shows that 40 percent of voters support Gomez while 44 percent support Markey, and sixteen percent of voters were undecided. The race between the two candidates is proving surprisingly tight, especially for the heavily Democratic state of Massachusetts.

The PPP poll reveals that 41 percent of voters surveyed saw Gomez in a favorable light while 27 percent felt the opposite, and 32 percent were unsure. On the other hand, 44 percent of voters held a positive opinion of Markey, 40 percent held an unfavorable opinion, and 15 percent were not sure.
