NEW: Superintendent Melinda Boone Resigns, Takes Job in Virginia

Thursday, October 08, 2015

On Thursday morning, Superintendent Dr. Melinda Boone announced her resignation from Worcester Public Schools and will take over as Superintendent of Norfolk Public Schools (NPS) in Virginia.

In a statement to NPS, Dr. Boone said, “I am honored to be selected as superintendent of Norfolk Public Schools There is no greater honor than to be called back home to serve and lead in the community that has meant so much to me professionally and personally. Norfolk Public Schools provided me the opportunity to further develop and refine my leadership skills in running an urban district and best practices in school turnaround.  Those experiences played a significant role in the success experienced in Worcester Public Schools. I am very excited about collaborating with the School Board, principals and teachers to raise the level of student achievement and community confidence in its public schools. Working together with the community, we will create greater opportunities for the youth of this city!”

In Dr. Boone's tenure, graduation rates have gone up and dropout rates have gone down across the city. However, school committee members, administrators, and teachers have scrutinized her school safety measures and her handling of a number of issues including the hiring of personnel, and the lack of communication between her office and the individual schools.

Mayor Joe Petty said, "Worcester is losing a passionate and talented leader. I've worked with Dr. Boone the past six years, and I want to wish her the best of luck as she returns home to become Superintendent of Norfolk, VA Public Schools."

At next Thursday's school committee meeting, Mayor Petty will ask the school committee to end Dr. Boone's contract and appoint Chief Academic Officer Marco Rodrigues as interim Superintendent until a new Superintendent is hired.

Dr. Boone received a three-year contract extension earlier this year.

Dr. Boone grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. She has been Superintendent in Worcester since 2009.
