NEW: US Supreme Court Legalizes Gay Marriage in All 50 States - MA Reacts
Friday, June 26, 2015
The reaction was immediate by many who have long supported the equal rights for gay and lesbian couples.
"It's really amazing. It's very, very exciting," said John Trobaugh, President of Worcester Pride. "One of the reasons we (John and his husband) moved away from Alabama is because of the lack of ability to get married and have a family. And now that's the law of the land."
"There's still a lot of work to be done," said Trobaugh. "There always will be. But we are very excited. It's a really momentous and an amazing thing. It's really something that I'm happy to see happen in my lifetime."
Worcester Pride will be holding a celebration tonight at the MB Lounge on Grafton Street. For details, click here: Marriage Equality Pop Up Party.
Reaction by those opposed to gay marriage in Massachusetts was equally vocal. Andrew Beckwith, President of Massachusetts Family Institute (MFI), comments, “Tragically, the court has elevated the sexual preferences of adults over the needs of children, the constitutions of a majority of the states, and the religious freedom of all.”
“With the Court’s decision today, we see the completion of a nationwide erosion of the people’s right to decide for themselves what marriage is," said MFI President Emeritus Kris Mineau in a released statement.
