NEW: Winter Storm Update: Worcester Hits 100 Inches of Snow this Season
Sunday, February 15, 2015
Worcester DPW had its entire fleet of 348 plows out Sunday afternoon. DPW finished its main line plowing around 2 PM and expected to have residential streets finished by 5 PM. Sanding and salting is being done by crews later tonight. Parks employees are out clearing sidewalks around Worcester's parks and municipally-owned properties.
MEMA crews will continue to work on removing snow from high traffic areas by hauling snow to the Worcester Regional Airport.
On Sunday, the Worcester Fire Department had to respond to two structure fires, but no one was injured thanks to quick work by the WFD and because residents had shoveled out fire hydrants near both locations.
Structural collapses are a major concern for the city. Inspectional Services Division reported a structural failure on Sunday morning at 138 Green Street.
According to the City Manager's office, "Inspectors found that an ice dam forced an upper floor beam to drop several inches, damaging the sprinkler main and causing water damage to all lower floors. The building is stable, but businesses there will be closed until further notice."
The city wants to remind residents to clear off snow from their roof as necessary, keep their sidewalks clear, and to shovel out any fire hydrants they can.
