The replication will serve as a monument to the original structure, which is badly damaged.
“The clock tower monument will be a true testament to the important role Worcester has played in the treatment of mental health over the past 180 years, and will continue to play well into the future,” said Congressman McGovern, who has been an active participant in efforts to save the clock tower.
The building has been on Preservation Worcester’s Most Endangered Structures List 6 times.
“Through grassroots advocacy strategies, with the support of Congressman McGovern, the Worcester City Council, and local media outlets, and with compromise and in partnership with state agencies, the Preservation Worcester proposed Clock Tower Monument will become a reality. While we are saddened to see the Clock Tower demolished, we are excited about the concept of the Clock Tower monument,” Executive Director of Preservation Worcester, Deborah Packard, said in a statement.
The signing ceremony was held at Preservation Worcester. Other participants in the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement included Carol Cornelison, (Commissioner, DCAM), Marcia Fowler, (Commissioner, DMH), and James Constantine, (Chair, Worcester Historical Commission).
