NEW: Worcester Police Foot Patrols Returning to Main South

Tuesday, February 05, 2013

The Worcester Police Department has extended its Tactical Response Area (TRA) designations in the Main South area of the city and will reestablish foot patrols in the area, according to letter from Chief of Police Garry Gemme to the City Manager.

"Based upon our identification of negative trends, usually occurring in small geographical areas, the department redirects additional police resources in an attempt to stabilize the area," Gemme wrote. "These small geographical areas are designated as a Tactical Response Area (TRA). The TRA strategy is primarily short-term with a citywide focus based on an identifiable need."

According to Gemme, sections of Main South were designated as TRA over the past several weeks, and the WPD has continued to identify activity in the area requiring an ongoing police presence.

"In an effort to reverse this negative trend we extended the TRA designation in parts of Main South through next week," Gemme said.

In addition, Gemme said the WPD will reestablish foot patrols in Main South for four to five weeks at a cost $15,000 per week.

"We will continue to monitor the area and evaluate the needs of the neighborhood over the next several weeks," he said. "It is my hope that through the management of existing departmental resources we can fund these patrols without an additional appropriation."
