WPI Names Commencement Speaker
Thursday, April 26, 2012
The commencement is scheduled for May 12th, and will be the 144th commencement exercise in the university’s history. As the leader of a Fortune 100 financial services organization, Ferguson is the kind of accomplished commencement speaker WPI was looking for.
“Roger Ferguson has an extraordinary record of achievement as both an industry leader and a public servant,” WPI President and CEO Dennis D. Berkey said. “His responsible leadership in challenging times, commitment to education and unique insights as one of the nation’s most respected economists make him an ideal speaker at our 2012 Commencement.”
Prior to joining TIAA-CREF, Ferguson served as vice chairman of the Board of Governors of the U.S. Federal Reserve System from 1999 to 2006. While serving as vice chairman, Ferguson was a voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee and chaired Federal Reserve Board committees on banking supervision and regulation.
Alan Greenspan, former long-term Fed chairman referred to Ferguson as “one of the most effective vice chairmen in the history of the Federal Reserve.” As commencement speaker, Ferguson will receive an honorary degree from WPI, as will several others.
The others receiving honorary degrees from WPI are Susan Windham-Bannister, Nancy Hopkins and Robert L. Norton. Bannister is the first president and CEO of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, while Hopkins is a professor of biology at MIT and Norton received the Milton Prince Higgins II Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering award at WPI.
