Petty and Augustus Support Local Arts Following Vandalism of Elm Park

Sunday, June 14, 2015

On Saturday night, six pieces of art work that were part of the city's Art in the Park event at Elm Park were vandalized and destroyed. Mayor Joseph Petty and City Manager Ed Augustus have since pledged $500 each to Arts in the Park in response to the unfortunate acts.

"I want to personally apologize to the artists who put so much into their works, to beautify Elm Park and inspire others. This act does not represent the Worcester that I know, and the value that the majority of our city places on the arts," said Petty. "The city manager and I are personally pledging $500 to help Art in the Park recover from this appalling act of vandalism. I challenge my colleagues in government, the business community, and the rest of the city to do the same, to demonstrate Worcester's unwavering support of the arts."

Augustus added, "I am extremely saddened by this disgusting assault on the arts in Worcester. I went to the park this morning to see the damage and to assure the artists and organizers the city is behind them and is offering our full support as they move forward. The Worcester Police Department is investigating and will do everything in its power to catch those responsible. Worcester deeply values its strong, vibrant arts community. One act of ignorance will not diminish that creative spirit."
