Sixteen Worcester Gang Members Arrested on Firearms Charges
Wednesday, October 07, 2015
According to the Worcester Police Department (WPD), five of the 16 gang members have been victims or suspects of gun violence.
The investigation was a joint effort between the WPD and the Worcester Police Gang Unit, the Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Chief Gary J. Gemme said, “The Worcester police department aggressively targeted gun violence over the summer months after seeing a spike in shooting incidents throughout the city. We developed a number of strategies in collaboration with the Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Drug Enforcement Agency to address the problem and make our neighborhoods safer. Our Investigative Division, led by Captain Paul B. Saucier and our Gang Unit, led by Sgt. Stephen L. Roche worked with our law enforcement partners to specifically target violent street gangs and illegal firearms. The removal of these weapons from the streets and the arrests of these gang members are a significant accomplishment that helps protect our city from gang and gun violence. "
