South High’s Binienda Strong Favorite for Worcester’s Interim Superintendent

Monday, October 12, 2015

South High Principal Maureen Binienda

Within minutes of news breaking that Worcester Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Melinda Boone would be resigning, Mayor Joe Petty had already announced that he would be recommending Chief Academic Officer Dr. Marco Rodrigues to be named interim superintendent for the remainder of the school year.

“We must keep the momentum going,” Petty said. “...Worcester has a good reason to be proud of its public schools. I am confident that Dr. Rodrigues can keep us heading upward, while we find a new leader that can guide the Worcester Public Schools even higher. Our children deserve a world-class education, and I plan to continue working every day to make sure they have it.”

Although Mayor Petty holds Dr. Rodrigues in high regard, not everyone in the city is pleased with his recommendation. Several school committee members and city councilors, as well as other candidates for school committee, have publicly lambasted Petty for what they’re calling a “knee-jerk reaction.”

Many city officials have called for Maureen Binienda, Principal at South High, to serve as interim superintendent.

Binienda is in her 40th school year as an employee of the Worcester Public Schools and her sixth as Principal of South High Community School in Worcester.

“As the Mayor and the members of the School Committee ponder and discuss the selection of an interim Superintendent of Schools, I hope and expect that they will give strong consideration to Maureen Binienda, principal of South High School,” said City Councilor Gary Rosen in a released statement.

“Ms. Binienda is a smart, experienced and self-motivated individual. She is the type of person that is easy to like for the best of reasons. As the longtime principal of South High, she has proven to be a capable and dedicated educational leader. She embraces all opportunities to work with students, parents, teachers, and her colleagues in school administration. She has a knack for motivating students to work hard and for encouraging their parents to get involved in the education of their children,” Rosen added.

Donna Colorio

“I do not support Mayor Petty's appointment of Dr. Rodrigues as acting Superintendent; it is the wrong choice, as he is a continuation of poor leadership of the Boone administration,” said former School Committee member and current candidate Donna Colorio. “Rodrigues was behind the safety plans with Boone that received criticism from teachers, parents, students, politicians and the teacher's union (EAW).  Rodrigues is Boone 2.0.”

Councilor Rosen is not alone in his endorsement of Binienda for interim superintendent. School Committee member Brian O’Connell told GoLocal he will make a recommendation for Binienda at Thursday’s School Committee meeting.

"I'm optimistic. If we have leadership that's active, aggressive, determined and focused on the best interest of the students, then the future will be promising," O'Connell sadid

Using the term "critical mass," O'Connell called a good superintendent as one that works well with teachers, students and parents. "With a superintendent like that, Worcester would be a second-to-none urban school district," O'Connell said.

According to O’Connell, Binienda would be that type of superintendent.
