slides: Super PACs Working Within the MA Governor’s Race

Friday, August 22, 2014

SuperPACs are outspending the political campaigns in the Massachusetts governor’s race by a margin of almost 4 to 1; Super PACs have declared $4.7 million to this election cycle while the political campaigns themselves have declared $1.3 million.

In an effort to increase transparency on Super PAC spending a new state law was passed on August 1st, 2014, declaring that Super PACs will now be required to disclose their donors when they spend money on campaigns.

“I fully supported the recent legislation signed by Governor Patrick that requires full disclosure of all Super PAC campaign contributions,” said Gubernatorial candidate Steve Grossman, who is one of the candidates who has had the support of a Super PAC in this election. “Transparency has been a hallmark of my four years as treasurer, and I believe that transparency in all political contributions should be required."

Currently, any Super PAC that organizes and spends more that $250 on a campaign is required to file with the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance. Additionally, with the new law in place, they are required to list their donors.

Check out the slideshow below for a current list of Super PACs spending money on the governor’s race in Massachusetts.
