Supreme Court Justice Kennedy Announces Retirement

Thursday, June 28, 2018

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is retiring

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy has announced his retirement after 43 years in the federal judiciary.

“It has been the greatest honor and privilege to serve our nation in the federal judiciary for 43 years, 30 of those years on the Supreme Court,” said Kennedy in a statement.

He will step down on July 31.

About Kennedy

Kennedy was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1987 and sworn in on February 18, 1988.

Kennedy is most well-known for his 2015 decision that legalized gay marriage in the United States.

Other cases that he is known for include Boumediene v. Bush and Citizens United v. FEC.

He also wrote in part the majority opinions in Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

Trump to Appoint New Justice

Kennedy’s retirement means that President Donald Trump will appoint a new Supreme Court Justice.

Trump's last Supreme Court Justice pick was Neil Gorsuch.
